A few days ago, we covered The Fastest Bicycle, a documentary following London South Bank University students in their attempt to break the world human-powered speed record during the World Human Powered Speed Challenge in Battle Mountain, Nevada. Today, we’re switching continents and taking a look at two videos from a Canadian student engineering team in Montreal — the VelOOM club from ÉTS Montréal — who developed and raced a highly unconventional front-wheel-drive (FWD) velomobile.

The videos provide a detailed look at their design process, testing and on-track experience, and I have to say I was genuinely impressed by the creativity and technical variety that went into this project. I’ve watched both videos several times, and every viewing revealed another clever idea hiding in the details. One example that really caught my attention is their 3D-printed spring used to actuate part of the shifting mechanism — a great demonstration of practical innovation.
