Sometimes it takes a while to edit a video—or even to get around to editing it at all. In this one, we look back at our 2024 family trip along the Ohře River cycle trail in the Czech Republic. We didn’t research the route much beforehand and were in for a bit of a surprise. Although it follows the river, it’s nothing like the flat cycle paths you find along the Danube. The terrain was quite hilly, with steep climbs often on gravel or other rough surfaces. Add in the hot weather, and it became a pretty demanding ride.
Compared to our previous two family bike trips, one big thing had changed: we had a new team member, Abbie, our five-month-old Labradoodle puppy. She rode comfortably in a Burley Bark Ranger XL trailer but came with plenty of her own needs. That meant switching to a more relaxed family-touring mode—forgetting about daily distance goals or any adult performance ambitions, giving the puppy enough time to play and rest, patiently deal with the kids’ complaints about all those steep hills, and carry as much as possible in the aidoo cargo trailer I towed.
I don’t even know the total distance we covered, but on my way back to Cheb by train to pick up the car, I overheard two cyclists talking about riding the same route on their gravel bikes—in a single day. Still, it was a fantastic few days on our recumbents, which we wrapped up by joining the Czech Recumbent Meeting 2024 in Osek, in the foothills of the Ore Mountains. Yes, more hills again…
