VelomobileWorld.com, the largest velomobile manufacturer based in Romania, has teamed up with Jens Buckbesch and Eggert Bülk to introduce a brand-new velomobile trailer. Many visitors already caught a first glimpse of the prototype at the SPEZI show, where it attracted quite a bit of attention thanks to its size, clever construction, and clear focus on practical long-distance travel.

Before delving deeper, here is how Jens Buckbesch himself describes the starting point and core ideas behind the project:
“Eggert Bülk and I have built a trailer that I would like to introduce here. The starting point was to build a velomobile trailer that is suitable for speed, has a solar surface that significantly extends the range of pedelec drives and enables a very large payload.
Compactness, modular expandability, self-supporting body and good aerodynamics were also part of the specifications. A large Euronorm crate (¼ Euro pallet 60cm × 40cm / 23.6 × 15.8″ or 2 large water crates) should fit. At the same time, the trailer should be very light.”
WHY A VELOMOBILE TRAILER?
Velomobiles are famous for offering generous storage space, and their aerodynamic shells keep efficiency high even when loaded. In everyday life, many riders can pack more than enough gear inside the body of the velomobile.
But there are moments when that built-in capacity simply isn’t enough.
Large or bulky items, camping setups, longer expeditions, weekend trips with extra comfort, or transporting goods that exceed the internal cargo area—all of these push the limits of even the most spacious models. That’s the niche this trailer is addressing.
At the same time, velomobiles provide full-year weather protection that open bicycles can’t offer, making them a practical car replacement for many daily trips. Since most car journeys involve a single person and only modest luggage, combining a velomobile with a lightweight, aerodynamic trailer can take over even more of those tasks.
One of the core ideas behind the trailer is to keep the velomobile itself light and fast for everyday riding, while offering an add-on solution for the rare occasions that require significantly more cargo space. In other words: the velomobile remains optimized for speed, and the trailer is there for the missions that demand volume.
The trailer’s very low center of gravity makes it extremely resistant to tipping. Early test rides confirmed stability both in fast corners and at high speeds. Concerns that an unloaded trailer might hop were unfounded, even after switching from 50 mm / 1.9″ tires to narrower Conti-Urban 32 mm / 1.25″.
Rolling resistance and air resistance are also surprisingly low. In testing, pulling the trailer reduced average speed by only about 4.6 km/h (2.9 mph) when cruising at around 33 km/h (20.5 mph).
A Smart Wheel-Well System for Two Ride Modes
A clever part of the Bülk Basecamp trailer’s design is its dual-position wheel system, which allows the wheels to be mounted either very low for velomobile use or higher for touring and rough-terrain riding. In the low position, the trailer sits close to the ground and offers excellent stability at speed, making it ideal for everyday velomobile operation. When switched to the higher setting, the trailer gains significantly more ground clearance, which is useful when it is pulled with a harness or taken onto rougher surfaces. This simple quick-release mechanism of the wheels effectively gives the trailer two different personalities and extends its usability far beyond smooth roads.
