The first in what we hope will be a long series of interviews with the founders of recumbent companies. We call it FOUNDERS’ EDITION. Jack Wiswell and Wayne Oom of TerraTrike rarely appear in public, let alone give interviews, so Matt Galat and I (Honza Galla) had the unique opportunity to ask them questions about their idea to start making trikes, their early years and the time when they welded the frames themselves, the move of production to Taiwan, and whether they ever considered making two-wheeled recumbents. We also got to look through a scrapbook full of historical photos and early advertisements.
The TerraTrike brand was originally founded as WizWheelz, a name loosely related to that of one of the founders, Jack Wiswell. Today, WizWheelz serves as the umbrella company and owner not only of TerraTrike itself, but also of the Greenspeed brand, and for several years it was also behind the American recumbent trade show Cycle-Con. Starting this year, however, the event is organized by former WizWheelz sales and marketing director Marshall Randall and his wife. WizWheelz is based in Grand Rapids, in the state of Michigan, and is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of recumbent trikes. The company focuses primarily on entry-level, economically affordable models and the mid-range segment of recumbent trikes. Production takes place in Taiwan.
All in all, an interesting video interview with two important personas in the world of recumbent trikes.
