There are sporty trikes, there are racing trikes—and then there are machines like the Trisled Gen3 Volare, which comfortably land in the extreme category. Designed and built by the innovative Australian brand Trisled, the Gen3 Volare isn’t something you’d ride to the grocery store.

It’s definitely not a three-wheeler you would normally use on roads or bike trails, and when I imagine the uphill races during one of the recent HPV World Championships in France or Austria, I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t want to ride it there either. It’s simply a circuit special designed for training rides.

From Racing Chasis to Training Trike

The Gen3 Volare evolved from a chasis that many Australian student teams had already been using as the base for their fully faired racing velomobiles. These teams compete in the Australian Human Powered Vehicle Super Series (AHPVSS), a long-standing and highly competitive school-based racing league.

But as Trisled founder Ben Goodall explains, the original Gen3 frame—designed for full race fairings—wasn’t ideal for training. It featured geometry optimized for aerodynamics, mounting points for body shells, a highly adjustable crank boom, and indirect steering. Great for competition; overkill for training.

The solution? Strip it down, rethink the layout, and build something meant for serious training while still staying approachable. That’s how the Gen3 Volare came to be.

A Bold Look and a Radical Design

The very first prototype of the Volare stands out with its bold purple-pink color scheme, drawing attention to the long, straight side tubes connecting the front and rear wheels. These tubes also frame the deeply reclined seat, giving the trike a sleek and aggressive profile.

And that seat angle? It’s reclined! There’s hardly any angle—just a headrest designed to keep the rider’s eyes on the road. To some, that might seem impractical or even uncomfortable at first glance. But according to early feedback, the Gen3 Volare surprises many with its ride quality.

Wait… It’s Comfortable?

We know what you’re thinking. This looks like a purebred racer. What comfort?

In a recent video, several test riders used one word repeatedly: “comfortable.” That’s not something you’d expect to hear when talking about a rigid training trike designed for aerodynamic efficiency and minimal weight.

Built for a Purpose

This trike isn’t made for paved bike trails or leisure tours. It’s a tool, engineered to prepare riders for the unique demands of Australian HPV racing—long hours in the cockpit, high speeds, and split-second responsiveness. It’s raw, it’s fast, and it knows exactly what it’s meant to do.

And while the Gen3 Volare might never be mass-produced or widely used outside the AHPVSS scene, it’s a fascinating look into how recumbent technology continues to evolve, not just for comfort or utility, but for performance. Trisled is now waiting for feedback from potential customers before deciding whether to turn the Volare into a standard production model.

Watch both videos and decide for yourself: is this the wildest recumbent trike on the planet?
